Average Points Per Game

Average points per game is a fantasy football stat that shows how many fantasy points a player scores per contest, calculated by dividing total points by games played.

Average points per game, often shortened to PPG, is one of the quickest ways to judge how productive a fantasy player has been. You find it by taking a player's total fantasy points and dividing by the number of games they have played. If a running back scored 180 points over 15 games, his average is 12 points per game.

The stat is useful because raw totals can be misleading. A player who scored 200 points but appeared in all 17 games might be less valuable per week than a player who scored 180 points in 14 games. Averages let you compare players on the same scale, no matter how many games each one played.

One caution: averages can hide how the points were earned. A player might have a few huge games and many quiet ones, so his average looks better than his typical weekly output. For that reason, managers often look at average points per game alongside game logs to see how steady a player really is.

Common questions

How do you calculate average points per game in fantasy football?

Divide the player's total fantasy points by the number of games they have played. For example, 150 points over 10 games equals 15 points per game.

Why is average points per game better than total points?

Total points rewards players who simply played more games. The average shows how many points a player typically produced when active, which makes comparisons fairer, especially for players who missed time with injuries.
