Boom or Bust

A boom or bust player is one whose weekly fantasy output swings wildly between huge games and duds, with little in between.

In fantasy football, a boom or bust player delivers results all over the map. Some weeks he scores a handful of touchdowns and wins your matchup almost by himself. Other weeks he disappears with two catches for 20 yards. Deep-threat receivers, big-play running backs, and touchdown-dependent tight ends often fit this mold.

The upside is obvious: a boom week can beat almost any opponent. The risk is just as real. Start a bust-heavy player in the wrong week and your lineup is playing from behind before the Sunday night game even kicks off. Managers who chase booms need a strong bench to cover the bad weeks.

Many managers prefer these players as flex starts or in tournaments, where a big swing is worth the gamble. In season-long head-to-head leagues, consistency often matters more, so steady volume players tend to be safer weekly starts.

Common questions

How do I spot a boom or bust player?

Look for players who rely on long touchdowns or big plays rather than steady volume. If most of his fantasy points come from a few explosive plays each month, he fits the profile.

Should I draft boom or bust players?

They make sense as upside picks after your safe starters are locked in. Just plan to stream or bench them when the matchup looks tough.
