Injury Report

The injury report is an official league listing of which players are hurt, how seriously, and whether they are expected to play in the upcoming game.

In the NFL, every team must release an injury report on certain days of the week, and it becomes a big deal for fantasy managers trying to set their lineups. Each injured player gets a practice status (did not practice, limited, or full) and a game designation for the week: questionable, doubtful, or out. Questionable means the team thinks the player has a real chance to play, doubtful means he is very unlikely to play, and out means he will definitely not play.

For fantasy football, the injury report is one of the most important tools for making start and sit decisions. A star running back listed as questionable can turn a whole lineup upside down, since managers must guess whether he will play, how many snaps he will get, and how effective he will be. Many managers hedge by planning a backup option, especially for players in Sunday night or Monday night games, because there is no fallback if a player is ruled out after the early games end.

Smart managers check the injury report all week long, not just on game day. Practice participation during the week often signals whether a player is truly recovering. A player who misses practice all week but is listed as questionable is riskier than one who was limited early and then practiced fully on Friday. Following trusted beat reporters on social media also helps, since teams sometimes announce rulings shortly before kickoff.

Common questions

What do the injury report designations mean?

"Out" means the player will not play, "doubtful" means he is very unlikely to play, and "questionable" means it is genuinely uncertain, usually a coin flip or better that he suits up.

When should I make a decision about a questionable player?

It is safest to decide before the early Sunday games start if you have a healthy alternative. If you wait on a player with a late game and he is ruled out, you may have no one left to insert into your lineup.

Does a player listed as questionable still produce fantasy points?

Often yes, but there is risk. Some questionable players play their normal role, while others see limited snaps or leave the game early if the injury flares up, so it helps to weigh reports about how the player looked in practice.
