A pass-catching back is a running back whose main role is running routes and catching passes, not pounding the ball between the tackles. These players line up in the backfield, slot out wide, or motion into the flat, and they give their quarterback a safe outlet when plays break down. In fantasy football, this role matters because every reception adds points in PPR leagues, and a back who catches six or seven passes a game can score like a starter even with only a handful of carries.

The role also protects a player's fantasy value in a few ways. A pass-catching back usually stays on the field in obvious passing situations, including two-minute drills and third downs, which means steady playing time regardless of game script. If his team falls behind, he often gets more work, not less, because the offense abandons the run. That makes these backs useful in both good and bad matchups.

Coaches often use a committee approach where one back handles early-down carries and another handles passing downs. The pass-catching back in that split usually has a safer weekly role but a lower touchdown total, since goal-line carries often go to the bigger back.
