How is replacement level different from just looking at points scored?
Points scored ignores how easy it is to replace them. A player's real value comes from how much he beats the freely available alternative at his own position, not his raw total.

Replacement level is the level of production you could get for free from the waivers or the last bench spot, used as the baseline for measuring a player's value.
In fantasy football, replacement level is the baseline of production you can pick up at any time without giving anything up — a freely available player on waivers or the last player drafted. Any value a player provides above that baseline is what actually helps you win, so this idea is used to compare players fairly across positions.
The concept matters most because positions are not equal. There are plenty of usable quarterbacks and tight ends, but few elite ones, while running backs and wide receivers get scooped up fast. A quarterback scoring 18 points a week might be worth less than a running back scoring 14, because the 'free' quarterback you could grab off waivers already scores close to 18, while the free running back scores far less than 14.
When people trade or draft, they are often thinking in terms of value over replacement without saying so. A starter at a thin position who misses a few games can still be worth more than a healthy player at a deep position, because the gap between that starter and his replacement is bigger.

Because the drop from starters to freely available running backs is usually steep. Once the good ones are gone, what's left on waivers scores far fewer points, so locking in production early matters more.
