Robust RB

Robust RB is a draft strategy where you load up on running backs early, taking them with most or all of your first several picks.

The Robust RB strategy means committing to the running back position in the early rounds of a fantasy draft. A manager using this approach might take two or even three running backs with their first three or four picks, waiting on wide receivers, tight end, and quarterback until the middle rounds.

The logic behind the strategy is that running backs touch the ball more than almost any other player, so a strong group of them gives you a steady base of points every week. Running backs can also get hurt or lose their jobs quickly, so having several good ones protects you when one goes down. Extra running backs can be traded to fill holes at other positions.

The tradeoff is that you pass on elite wide receivers and tight ends, which can leave your lineup thin at those spots if your late-round picks do not work out. Robust RB works best when you believe the running backs available early are clearly better than the ones you could get later.

Common questions

How many running backs should I take early with a Robust RB strategy?

Most managers take at least two running backs in the first three rounds, and some take three in the first four rounds before filling other positions.

Is Robust RB the same as Zero RB?

No, they are opposites. Robust RB drafts running backs early, while Zero RB waits on the position and builds around wide receivers instead.
