What makes a player a value pick?
A player becomes a value pick when he produces far more fantasy points than his draft slot suggested he would. The later you draft him and the better he performs, the bigger the value.

A value pick is a player drafted later than his expected production deserves, giving your fantasy team a strong return for a low draft cost.
In fantasy football, a value pick is a player you select in a later round who performs like a player taken much earlier. Every pick in a draft has a cost: an early-round pick is a big investment, while a late-round pick costs almost nothing. When a cheap pick produces big numbers, that is value. Value picks are how managers win leagues without needing every high-profile player on their roster.
Value is usually judged by comparing where a player was drafted to how many fantasy points he scores. A running back taken in the 10th round who finishes as a top-10 scorer at his position is a classic value pick. On the other hand, a first-round player who barely outscores a late-round option is a poor value, even if he was decent.
You can find value picks by targeting players in good situations who are being overlooked. Common targets include backups behind injury-prone starters, rookies with a clear path to touches, and veterans on new teams. Waiting on a position deep in talent and loading up on a thin one early is another way to build value into your whole draft.

Are sleepers and value picks the same thing?
They overlap a lot. A sleeper is a lesser-known player expected to outperform expectations, while a value pick is any player who returns more production than his draft cost. Most sleepers end up being value picks if they hit.
Why do value picks matter so much?
Because everyone in your league gets the same number of draft picks. If your late-round picks produce like early-round players, your roster is stronger than your draft position alone would allow.
